Cartagena de Indias, Colombia

Racing along the top of the wall, Caleb ran through the scenarios that would get him off this wall. He needed to get ahead of the police force that was systematically blocking every access to the wall.

Behind him, the two motorcycle cops were joined by two more. He still had several hundred yards of lead on his pursuers. If he was running the bike at full throttle, and Caleb doubted he could squeeze any more speed out of the Suzuki.

He banked right, narrowly avoiding a woman wheeling her juice cart down the walkway. She shouted something at him, but Caleb ignored her. In his mirror, he caught the four motorcycles chasing him whiz around the woman.

Valentina tightened her grip on Caleb, and he wondered what he’d done by getting involved with her. Had he just walked on and minded his business, she’d likely have taken a beating, but walked away with only bruises and scars. Now, he’d painted a target on her back, and even if they got clear of the city, she’d never be safe from that cop.

That thought dug into his gut. He’d run across his fair share of corrupt officials. Most were looking the other way for a quick payday, but those trafficking in humans like this policeman were the worst. He considered that this girl wasn’t really all that much older than Amanda. Ten to twelve years, and he knew how fast a decade could slip past. He couldn’t imagine Amanda being subjected to what he guessed Valentina had experienced. The girl behind him was nothing more than a baby. Where had her family gone?

In the time since his wife died, Caleb often found Audrey’s voice to have replaced the one that used to be his conscience. As he flew across the top of Cartagena’s fortifications, he heard her instruct him.

“You have to save her,” Audrey whispered in his ear. “You’re the only hope she’s had.”

“Lot of good I’m doing her now,” Caleb pointed out.

“You’re in action,” Audrey assured him. “Nothing can stop you once you take action.”

The last remark was a reminder of his training with his mentor at the OOC. Marcus David, who wore the code name Hood, took Caleb out into the Appalachian wilds of Virginia where he dropped the young man from a helicopter.

“You have twenty minutes before the posse comes after you,” David warned him. “Don’t sit still. Remember Newton’s law—an object in motion tends to stay in motion. If you are taking action, you’re already ahead of the enemy.”

At the time, Caleb thought the sentiment was somewhat off. After all, Hood forgot the rest of Newton’s law that said an object in motion can be stopped by an outside force. After three days in the forest where Caleb survived on puddling rainwater and juniper berries, he understood that he simply had to avoid the outside force. He eluded the hunters for two weeks before he found David at a roadside hotel waiting for him. The men who had been hunting him came out two days later after they lost his scent.
